Em's parents had an apartment in one of the megastructures in the city. They were lower income so they were definitely small, shitty apartments, but it was a solid roof over their heads and a lot better than what many people got. His parents were married when they were too young to know better and too stupid to care. Dad had a low level corporate job while mom was essentially a receptionist at a local hostpital. The two of them got by well enough for a while but as they spent more time together it grew more and more clear that maybe they were a bit hasty when they got married.

Around the time that divorce was starting to form in their minds, Em's mom ended up (accidentally) pregnant with Em. Mom had to leave her job because of complications with the pregnancy, and Dad refused to leave because because of his pride. The two feeling trapped in this relationship both made them resentful - at each other, at themselves, at Emerick. As is the case in these situations, Emerick became the scapegoat for all of this and both parents took most of their unhappiness out on him. Dad physically abused him, and mom was emotionally abusive - though she was prone to slapping Em if hes poke out of turn.

Em did get one small reprieve: the building they lived in did have a school set up and funded by the corporation that owned it. It wasn't a great school by any means but Emerick did get at least a basic education as he grew up. He loved school because it was a chance for him to get away from his parents. He did make a friend while going to his classes, and they gave him a book as a gift. It was some high fantasy, underdog hero type of book, and Emerick still has it even as an adult. He's read it so many times the book is just about falling apart but it was always an escape from the shittiest times in his life. He cherishes this book even though he lost track of that friend and hasn't seen them in years.

In addition to this, Emerick has a little sister that's a few years younger than him. Generally, she didn't get the treatment from her parents as badly as Emerick because Em made sure to more or less always be the one to take everything. He couldn't spare her of everything, but he sure did try. After leaving home she took up the name Twintails and keeps her hair hot pink. She went into fashion design and modeling, and things just kinda worked out for her. After her first line signing she had Emerick went out to celebrate and she tried to say that the two of them could finally get away and live a better life, but it came out wrong and Em interpreted it as her making a better life for herself and abandoning him. Em got upset and left, and the two haven't spoken since. Twintails has a men's line called EMM (high fashion, but very practical - clothes she'd send to Emerick, if she knew where he was) to try to reach out to him but it hasn't worked. She still regularly designs for it out of hope, though. She would like to reconnect but isn't sure how to reach him.

-------

You're free to use Twintails, the childhood friend, and Emerick's parents as you see fit. I love hurting my characters and causing them angst. It's why I rp to begin with. :>

Em's vibe at Twintails is that he wants to reconnect but he really does think that she dislikes him because of the way things were left and the way he interpreted things, and he knows that he's a failure and he hardly wishes to hold her back. He is very proud of her though.

As for his parents, if Em never talked to them again it would still be too much. His adulthoold is trying to live in spite of them, but there is an element of wanting to be so successful that they acknowledge him.

Given Emerick's background, I would like him to have a rather crippling issue: if he is ever grappled he will freeze for one or two rounds of combat due to his past and trauma. While I obviously never want him to be in a precarious position in combat, I just think this is fun if it were to ever come up. :D

Friend from school -- Callum Hayes, who gave him a copy of Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. They quit talking after high school because Callum had the money to go to college while Emerick did not - just a falling out, no bad blood. Emerick and Callum had crushes for each other growing up, but neither acted on it. Callum ultimately became successful at Biotechnica, landing a very large sale as a rookie that earned him the nickname "Midas".
